Why RSS Is NOT Dead

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your holidays have been great and I wish everyone best wishes for this 2011!

I felt the urge of writing a post today about social media in general. Last night I saw The Social Network for the first time and I became inspired of how an idea can become a social revolution. [More about the movie in a different post in my “In The Reel” tag].

My RSS Story

I was introduced by RSS fairly recent in comparison with many who are avidly in the marketing space. I really did not get the idea of RSS at the beginning because I was already sharing information across Facebook and I did not feel like adding another service for my information. Another reason I resisted of using RSS was because I liked going After many of my friends insisted to give it a try, I opened Google Reader and gave it a shot…. AND I LOVED IT! It made all my reading easier and faster to look up and it also helped me discover new sites and blogs that I had never knew they existed. Ever since then I have become a loyal Google Reader user with 1000+ posts ready to be looked at.

With the help of Google Reader and RSS in general, I get to read interesting articles shared by my friends and from the sites I am subscribed with. That being said, today I came across an article by Lalawag [thank goodness they came back] about the recent Twitter “fight” between Michael ArringtonDave Winer, two of the biggest names of blogging  and later with Robert Scoble . This fight came about because TechCrunch released an article headlining “Facebook and Twitter are killing RSS” and then the smashing began [argument can be seen through Lalawags site].

RSS Still Lives!

I DO have to disagree with TechCrunch’s article saying the RSS is DEAD because it isn’t. In my case, I still use Facebook as a sharing site and share a lot of articles that I find interesting because I have found them through my Google Reader. If there was a website that I liked I would “like” them on Facebook and if they had a great line of articles I would subscribe through RSS. Yes, in some ways it might seem that this process is redundant, but what if you do not log on Facebook and miss an article? One would have to look up upon pages and pages of statuses of people before actually finding the article. With RSS it is simple to look up and almost instant. It is that simplicity of RSS that makes it so fundamental in this “Web 2.0” era.  Isn’t that why RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication? I really do not see RSS ever leaving the space and being replaced with a Facebook or a Twitter. If you think about it, Facebook and Twitter and other platforms are the messengers, and RSS is the central hub of news.

What do you guys think??
